Diploma in Mountain Medicine (Dip. Mtn. Med.)

Home ] Up ]

The Diploma is supported and underwritten by Medical Expeditions

David Hillebrandt and Peter Barry have, in a few short years, created the Diploma in Mountain Medicine. The energy and enthusiasm that has been invested in this project has been richly rewarded by the results.

Qualified UIAA guides are used to teach and examine the practical mountain skills in the Alps, Scotland and North Wales. The theory component is taught and examined by members of the medical faculty who have, between them, a broad range of mountaineering experience. Uniquely the faculty consists of doctors of all grades of seniority and are drawn from all sorts of different medical backgrounds. They are all united in their enthusiasm for the the outdoors and for the Diploma.

The diploma course is open to all qualified and registered doctors and to qualified, registered and suitably experienced paramedics and nurses.
Suitably experienced final year medical students can commence the course but have to be fully registered before the award of the diploma.

DIPLOMA OF MOUNTAIN MEDICINE (Dip Mtn Med)

endorsed by the British Mountaineering Council

The BMC

The Dip Mtn Med is an internationally recognised UIAA qualification with certificate recognition from the University of Leicester. The following list gives the names of all those holders of the UIAA/ICAR/ISMM (UK) Diploma in Mountain Medicine.

Those holders of the Diploma who wish to be available for consultation or lecturing have chosen to give additional details, which have not been verified by Medex. To hold the UIAA Diploma a doctor must be fully registered in their country of origin and fulfil the minimum requirements of the Diploma syllabus at the time of the award. To ensure that all holders keep up to date with their relevant medical and mountaineering skills all diplomats complete a logbook in the style of the UK national body awards for mountain instructors. This logbook shows pre-course experience, course experience and most importantly continued professional development after the award of the diploma. Diplomats can make their logbook available to any prospective patient, client or employer.

It is the Diploma holder’s responsibility to ensure that they hold relevant professional insurance for any work they undertake.

Even within the field of mountain medicine there are many sub specialities and areas of interest which may be reflected in the diplomats personal entry which reflects both mountaineering and medical interests.  When asked for advice diplomats may well choose to refer within or outside the group for a second opinion.

We would stress that there are many very experienced mountaineering doctors in the UK who have chosen not to undertake the diploma. Medex has no desire to see the Dip Mtn Med become essential for doctors to practice mountain medicine. Many non-diploma doctors are members of Medex or similar organisations and the world of expedition and mountaineering medicine is small, on a national and international scale and there is much shared expertise. If a diploma holder is unable to answer your question they may well refer you to another expert in the field.

Any advice or consultations, whether by telephone, E-mail or in person are outside the provision of the National Health Service in the U.K. Consulting mountaineers should ensure that they request details of any fees that are to be charged prior to any consultation.

Candidates are listed in order of award of the Diploma and the sequence has no relevance to experience or expertise.
