Medex and Medical Expeditions
  • Research
  • Adventure
  • Education
2
How it all started
  • In 1991 we formed a charitable company to fund the 1994 British Mount Everest Medical Expedition.
3
Why?
  • An ascent of Everest was our prime objective but we had, on previous expeditions, seen the devastating effects of altitude illness.
  • We were determined to investigate the causes of such illness and educate our fellow adventurers about hidden dangers.

The Research in 1994
  • 75 members all took part in the research projects.
  • The quality and style of our science launched Medical Expeditions as a major player in the field of altitude science.
7
Education
  • Our research has been:
  • Presented at meetings in Europe, America, Japan and Chile.
  • Has been published in both lay and academic journals.
  • A High Altitude Medicine Handbook has been written.
  • Since 1991 we have run a regular course at the National Mountaineering Centre in North Wales. These have been attended by over a thousand doctors from all over the world.
  • In 2003 we developed the first English speaking Diploma in Mountain Medicine
  • For many years we have paid bursaries to students from developing countries in order to help them attend international meetings

Medical Expedition consolidates its Activities in 1998
  • After 1998 Medical Expeditions decided to concentrate its activities on its charitable objectives:
  • Conducting research into the mechanisms of altitude related illness.
  • Educating the medical profession and the mountaineering public about the dangers of mountain travel.
  • Medex took over the planning and logistical roles.
